Terms of Service

Last updated: July 6, 2026

1. Acceptance of Terms

By using the Sori Chrome extension or website (sori-translator.com), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use Sori.

By creating an account, you confirm that you are at least 13 years old (or 16 if you are located in the EU/UK).

2. What Sori Does

Sori is a Chrome extension that lets you highlight text on any webpage to get instant translations or dictionary definitions. It supports 123 languages and three modes: translation, monolingual dictionary, and bilingual dictionary. Sori also lets you listen to highlighted text with Text-to-Speech in supported languages, save words as flashcards and review them with spaced repetition on the Practice page, and bookmark words as saved notes that stay highlighted on the page.

Translations are powered by OpenAI and processed in real-time. We do not store the text you translate, unless you choose to save it as a flashcard in your decks. Text-to-Speech audio is generated in real-time by OpenAI or DeepInfra and is not stored.

3. Accounts

You can use Sori without an account (with limited daily usage). Creating an account gives you higher quotas and access to paid tiers.

You may create an account using email/password or by signing in with Google. When you sign in with Google, you authorize us to access your email address and basic profile information from your Google account.

You are responsible for:

  • Keeping your account credentials confidential
  • All activity that occurs under your account
  • Notifying us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access

You can delete your account at any time via Account Settings. Account deletion requires email verification for security. Deletion is permanent and removes your authentication data from our systems.

4. Your Content

When you save words as flashcards or create decks, you keep ownership of that content. You grant us a limited license to store, process, and display it solely to provide the service, for example syncing your decks across devices and scheduling your reviews.

You are responsible for the content you save. Deck names and card content must not contain unlawful material or infringe the rights of others.

Your flashcards and decks are permanently deleted when you delete your account. Saved notes are stored only on your device; you can remove them individually or by uninstalling the extension.

5. Usage Quotas

Each subscription tier includes daily limits for word translations, dictionary lookups (Smart Lookups), and text-to-speech playback, as well as a cap on the total number of saved notes. Daily limits are enforced automatically and reset daily; the saved-notes cap applies to the total number of notes stored. We reserve the right to adjust quotas with reasonable notice.

You may not attempt to circumvent quotas through technical means, multiple accounts, or any other method.

6. Payments and Subscriptions

Paid subscriptions are billed on a recurring basis through Stripe, monthly or yearly depending on the billing period you choose. By subscribing, you authorize us to charge your payment method automatically each billing period.

You can change your plan at any time. Upgrades to a higher tier apply immediately: you are charged a one-time price difference for the remainder of your current billing period, and your renewal date does not change. Downgrades to a lower tier and switches between monthly and yearly billing take effect at the end of your current billing period; you keep your current plan until then. Making a new plan change replaces any pending one that has not yet taken effect.

You may cancel your subscription at any time. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, you retain access until then.

All payments are final. We do not offer refunds for partial months, unused quota, or subscription periods already paid for.

7. Acceptable Use

You may not use Sori to:

  • Violate any applicable laws or regulations
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or abuse the service
  • Circumvent usage limits or security measures
  • Use the service for automated or bulk translation beyond normal personal use
  • Share your account with others to pool quota

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms without prior notice.

8. Intellectual Property

Sori, its branding, code, and content are owned by us and protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, or redistribute any part of the extension or website without permission.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

Sori is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee that translations are accurate, complete, or suitable for any specific purpose. Translation quality depends on OpenAI's models and may vary.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Sori shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including reliance on any translation provided.

In all cases, our total cumulative liability to you for any claim arising out of or relating to these Terms or the service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim, or (b) CAD $100.

11. Third-Party Services

Sori relies on third-party services, including OpenAI for translations and speech synthesis, DeepInfra for speech synthesis, Supabase for authentication and data storage, Stripe for payments, and Resend for transactional emails. We are not responsible for the availability, content, or practices of these third parties, and your use of Sori is also subject to their respective terms.

12. Dispute Resolution

If you have a dispute with us, you agree to first contact us via our help page and attempt in good faith to resolve the matter informally. Most concerns can be resolved this way. You agree not to commence any formal legal proceeding until at least 30 days after first notifying us.

13. Severability and Waiver

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect. Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms is not a waiver of that right or provision.

14. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will provide at least 30 days' notice before the changes take effect, where reasonably possible. Continued use of Sori after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

15. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Quebec, Canada, without regard to conflict of law principles. Nothing in these Terms affects the statutory rights you may have as a consumer under the laws of your country of residence, including consumer protection rights under EU law where applicable.
